I've compiled my "Starting Out with Jersey Reselling" notes, which were the catalyst for me escaping my life as a corporate slave, into a free note, so please check it out from my profile. If you feel like you're "overwhelmed and about to collapse," please give it a read.
During my time as a corporate slave and in the early days of reselling, I was a "nice guy" and "greedy," and I ended up exhausting myself by trying to do everything. Now I'm making sure to "focus on one thing." Are you currently trying to do "this and that" with your job or side hustle? ↓ #MercariReselling #MercariSideHustle
Now I make reselling on Mercari my main job, and I can manage it easily with less than 10 hours a week. I wake up late in the morning, go sourcing at my leisure, and in the afternoon I go to the gym or leisurely browse shops. My sales are more stable than when I had multiple income streams, and I have more peace of mind. Trying to do "this and that" was ultimately just killing me. ↓
One day, I suddenly realized, "This is just exhausting, just like my main job..." So I quit everything and focused entirely on jerseys in a genre that interested me. By specializing in just one type, research, photography, and packaging all became standardized, and the amount of work time decreased dramatically. ↓
The workload was insane. Product research, photography, pricing, shipping, inventory management. I'd be battling with my computer all weekend, and then staying up late thinking, "What should I sell next?" I was in the same "taking on everything" situation as a regular office worker, and I started to get even more exhausted. ↓
When I first became interested in Mercari as a side hustle and started reselling on Mercari, my initial thought was, "I'll buy everything that seems profitable." Sneakers, T-shirts, training gear... I bought and listed anything and everything. My sales did increase a little, but...↓
I took on this and that, working over 80 hours of overtime. I kept telling myself, "It's for the team," and "Everyone's struggling," but in reality, it was just exploitation. My salary stayed the same, and only exhaustion piled up. I was such a fool back then. ↓
During my time as a salaryman, I was considered the quintessential "nice guy." My boss and colleagues would say, "Jaji-san, you're good at this, so please take on this project and that project too!" I couldn't refuse because it would create a bad atmosphere, so I ended up taking everything and working until the last train every week. Every time I was praised as a "reliable nice guy," my heart died... ↓ #MercariSideHustle #MercariReselling
Even working in a cafe isn't safe these days. Be especially wary of people who approach you with "That's a nice story" or "You have good taste."
I flatly refused. "Sorry, but I'm making enough money from reselling right now, so I'm fine." The moment her smile faltered, I knew for sure. Her compliments were just bait. I realized I hadn't completely escaped my corporate slave mindset yet. ↓
My mind froze, thinking "Huh?". I suddenly felt pathetic for being so excited about the compliment on my stickers. It smelled just like when I was a corporate slave and my boss used me because he considered me a "nice guy". "I have something good to tell you, do you have a moment?" she said with a smile... ↓ #MercariSideHustle
She suddenly changed her tone and said, "Actually, I'm involved in something called network marketing... You can work freely in terms of time and location," and showed me some documents on her smartphone. The atmosphere changed in an instant. ↓ #MercariSideHustle #MercariReselling
I got carried away and said, "Well, I run an online business selling sportswear, and I do it at my own pace," and her eyes lit up. "Wow! I'm also looking for a flexible way of working right now. A lifestyle not bound by time sounds great, doesn't it?" The conversation was flowing well, and the atmosphere was getting nice...↓
I never had an encounter like this during my corporate slave days, and now I just work at a cafe in my free time, so I was really excited to be approached like this and replied a little boastfully, "Isn't it cool?" She smiled and asked, "That's nice, do you do some kind of creative work?"... ↓ #MercariSideHustle
I was working on my laptop at Tully's, sorting through my jersey resale inventory, when a young, pretty woman sitting next to me suddenly spoke up. "Excuse me, but the stickers on your laptop are really stylish! Where did you buy them?" Me: "Uh, oh, thank you..." I was startled for a second. ↓ #MercariResale
The biggest change is that I can now decide my own time. Back in my corporate days, I was exploited because I was labeled a "nice guy," but now I'm not used by anyone and I live by my own rules. #MercariReselling #MercariSideHustle
A month later, I told my company I was quitting. Now I work less than 10 hours a week reselling tracksuits and sportswear, waking up whenever I want, wearing whatever clothes I like, and working wherever I want. ↓ #MercariSideHustle #MercariReselling
Three months later, my side hustle income exceeded half of my main job income. The moment my boss asked me again, "I'll need you again this weekend," I finally said clearly, "Sorry, but I have personal plans, so I can't." My boss's face froze for a moment... ↓ #MercariReselling #MercariSideHustle
The first thing I tried was buying jerseys and sportswear from a nearby Book Off Super Bazaar. I was scared of the inventory risk, but when I listed just one item, it sold immediately. I made a profit of 2,800 yen. That was the trigger, and I started buying items little by little, only at night and in the morning. ↓ #MercariSideHustle #MercariReselling
It was common for my colleagues to think, "○○ is good at his job, so let's leave it to him." I was brainwashed into thinking it was "for the team," even though I wasn't getting paid for overtime. When I got home, I was too tired to do anything. One night, I thought, "If things continue like this, my life will be over," and I opened Mercari on my smartphone. ↓ #MercariReselling #MercariSideHustle
During my time as a salaried worker, every Friday at 5:55 PM my boss would come in and say, "Sorry, I need to leave early for next week's materials because of some family matters," and I'd end up sacrificing the weekend to prepare them. Every time he said, "You're a real lifesaver," it made me uneasy. After this went on for three years, I made a decision. ↓ #MercariReselling #MercariSideHustle
There are also sites like this,
Just give it a listen. We can talk after that.
When I replied, "Please move your car, as someone who needs this spot won't be able to use it in that short time," he threatened me, "What's wrong, kid? Are you trying to pick a fight?" I decided he wasn't someone I could reason with, so I brought this case to the Great Japan Fair Court. I request your judgment. #ParkingManners #FairCourt
A man who appeared to be able-bodied parked his car in the "parking space for wheelchair users" at a supermarket, so I asked him, "Isn't this a parking space for people who need it?" He glared at me and said, "I'm just parking here for a little while." ↓ #CarManners #CitizenTrial #FairTrial
So what is a #fight? What does it mean to be #goodatfights? The reality is that a group of guys who were acting tough and were feared for being good fighters were instantly defeated by a Naniwa duo (just two people) who probably have some experience in martial arts. #BreakingDown
#Ideas have no value - says the rich, while #Ideas have no value - says the poor, people who have turned ideas into money, and people who haven't. So, #Ideas do have value, don't they? #REALVALUECLUB #Takafumi Horie #People who are good at turning other people's ideas into money
By the way, watching the auditions for #BreakingDown, I thought it would be interesting if a group like that Naniwa duo from back then showed up, and that's what inspired this series of posts. There's still more to come, but since not many people are watching, I'll save it for another time.
Continued 5 The moment the dozen or so of his friends stopped in their tracks, unable to comprehend what was happening, 170's flying kick hit the back of the head of another well-known guy in Shibuya. Ignoring the guy who collapsed, 170 said to 190, "The police!" "Let's run!" #Shibuya #Gangsters #BreakingDown #I spoke to them later
Continued ④ That guy everyone feared in Shibuya at the time, a famous guy who had even been featured in magazines, was lying on the streets of Shibuya. 190 sat down on his back, picked up the stun gun he was holding, and said, "Is this your style?" #Shibuya #Gangsters #GangsterCulture #Breakingdown
Sensing something behind him, 170 had been unable to run, but at that moment, half-laughing, he shouted something and started running towards me—no, it was just a split second—no, no, I didn't see (or couldn't see) it, only a dull explosion cut through the commotion #Shibuya #Teamers #BreakingDown #IfIHadArtisticTalentIWouldTurnItIntoAManga
Continued ③ This is just my guess, but I feel like there was someone on this side (Shibuya?) who was leading them. The Naniwa duo, 170cm and 190cm tall, suddenly appeared on the other side of the street. "That's him!" shouted the stupid-looking guy with a swollen face, probably from being beaten up yesterday. Before the leader could give an order, a dozen or so people started running in that direction. The leader was momentarily...
Continued 2 Perhaps because of what happened the day before, Shibuya that day felt different than usual. The leader of the most influential team in Shibuya at the time (quite famous) was waiting with a dozen or so of his friends for the Naniwa duo to appear. This was because the Naniwa duo had said as they left the previous day, "We'll be back at the same time tomorrow." #Shibuya #Teamers #BreakingDown
Continued ① It wasn't an ordinary fight. Probably on the first day, around 7 PM, he was taking on about 8 guys, but he took them all down with one punch or one kick. I'd never seen anything like it before. And the next day, it happened again... #Shibuya #Gangsters #Breakingdown #ThatKickWhenIWatchedSatoruSayama'sVideo
No matter where I search online, I can't find anything about the rampage of the Kansai-dialect-speaking duo who terrified the Shibuya gangsters for one week in March 1990. Is it a hidden past? As a member of the S48 generation, what was that scene I saw in Shibuya back then? Does anyone know? #Shibuya #Chimer #Outsider #BreakingDown
